New Features in MidJourney 5.1

Here are some of the updates and improvements introduced with the Midjourney V5.1 upgrade:

• Enhanced coherence: The images produced are now more coherent and logical in nature.
• Better text prompt accuracy: The AI more accurately interprets and follows the prompts given to it.
• Decreased number of unwanted artifacts: Midjourney V5.1 has improved in minimizing the number of unwanted elements or artifacts in the images generated.
• Sharper images: The images generated are sharper and of higher quality.

Midjourney V5.1 has also reintroduced the concept of "opinionated" AI. In V5, the AI was "unopinionated", requiring users to provide longer, more detailed prompts to achieve the desired results. However, in V5.1, the AI has reverted back to being more "opinionated", meaning it can generate more sophisticated results from simpler prompts, similar to what was possible with V4 and earlier versions.
However, for users who prefer the "unopinionated" approach of V5, V5.1 also includes a RAW Mode, which is unopinionated and allows for greater control over the final image, but it's turned off by default.
The upgrade also brings improved interpretation of prompts, especially in terms of photo composition. For instance, there have been improvements in the AI's interpretation of prompts related to camera angles and depth of field.
In terms of specific improvements to image types, there are a few notable ones:

• Portraits without clutter: Midjourney V5.1 further reduces unwanted elements in the images, such as random text and unnecessary borders. This is particularly beneficial when creating portraits and lifestyle images.
• More humanized human subjects: The AI's ability to create human-like subjects has improved significantly. The AI can now produce more realistic human subjects with more life-like expressions and imperfections.

To switch to Midjourney V5.1, if you already have a Midjourney account, it's similar to choosing the version in the past. You select your desired version from the Settings menu. The V5.1 upgrade is turned on for all users by default, but you can go back to Settings and switch back to V5 or older versions if required. Without changing the settings, you can also add the suffix “–v 5.1” to your prompts to quickly access V5.1​1​.
